Bezienswaardigheden / tips Rockport 2026:

1) Rockport: Rockport in Maine (niet te verwarren met de bekende Rockport in Massachussetts) is een klein kustplaatsje en staat bekend om zijn rust, natuur, kunst en authentieke sfeer. De haven van Rockport is klein maar schilderachtig, perfect voor wandelingen of gewoon rustig zitten met uitzicht op het water. Central Street maakt deel uit van het Rockport Historic District, het historische centrum van Rockport. Dit district werd in 1976 toegevoegd aan de National Register of Historic Places. Het gebied rond Central Street bevat veel gebouwen uit de 19e eeuw, in stijlen zoals Greek Revival, Italianate, en ook wat Colonial Revival. Deze stijlen weerspiegelen de economische bloei van Rockport in die periode, vooral door industrieën als kalkproductie (“lime processing”), scheepsbouw, en ijswinning. Rockport is alles wat Maine bijzonder maakt, maar zonder de drukte. Het is een kleine gemeenschap maar zeker de moeite waard om hier te stoppen en rond te kijken. 

2) Rockport Marine Park: Rockport Marine Park ligt direct aan de haven en heeft diverse picknickplekken, steigers, uitzicht op Rockport Harbor, Andre the Seal, en de overblijfselen van historische kalkovens (kilns). Deze kilns zijn historisch belangrijk: in de 19e eeuw was kalkproductie een grote industrie in de regio. Kalk werd gebruikt in bouwmaterialen, en werd verscheept langs de oostkust. Ook staat er een replica van de locomotief die gebruikt werd om kalksteen vanuit de steengroeven naar de haven te brengen. 

3) Andre the Seal: Het beeld van Andre de zeehond staat ook in het Rockport Marine Park. Deze noem ik apart omdat er een mooi verhaal achter zit. Het beeld is speciaal gemaakt ter nagedachtenis aan Andre, een zeehond die een bekende inwoner was van de haven. Hij was gevonden als jonge pup en opgevoed door een lokale duiker en harbor master, Harry Goodridge. Andre was beroemd omdat hij in de winter naar een aquarium werd gebracht en dan in de lente weer terugzwom naar Rockport.

4) Aldermere Farm Ocean Trail: De Ocean Trail is een wandelpad van ca. 0,64 km lang, dat je brengt van Calderwood Lane naar de oceaan (Penobscot Bay). Het maakt deel uit van Aldermere Farm Preserve. Het terrein is een werkende boerderij (met Belted Galloway koeien) én natuurgebied, met trails, velden, bossen en kustlijn. Je loopt door een gemengd bos voordat je bij de rotsige kust terechtkomt. Het uitzicht op de oceaan (Penobscot Bay) en de rotsige kustlijn zijn het hoogtepunt.

1) Rockport: Rockport, Maine (not to be confused with the more popular Rockport in Massachusetts) is a small coastal town known for its tranquility, natural beauty, art, and authentic atmosphere. Rockport Harbor is small but picturesque, perfect for walks or just relaxing overlooking the water. Central Street is part of the Rockport Historic District, the historic center of Rockport. This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The area around Central Street contains many 19th-century buildings in styles such as Greek Revival, Italianate, and some Colonial Revival. These styles reflect Rockport's economic boom during that period, primarily due to industries such as lime processing, shipbuilding, and ice mining. Rockport is everything that makes Maine special, but without the hustle and bustle. It's a small community, but definitely worth stopping and exploring.

2) Rockport Marine Park: Rockport Marine Park is located right on the harbor and offers picnic areas, docks, views of Rockport Harbor, Andre the Seal, and the remains of historic lime kilns. These kilns are historically significant: in the 19th century, lime production was a major industry in the region. Lime was used in building materials and shipped up and down the East Coast. There is also a replica of the locomotive that was used to haul limestone from the quarries to the harbor. 

3) Andre the Seal: The Andre the Seal statue is also located in Rockport Marine Park. I'm mentioning this one separately because it has a fascinating story. The statue was created specifically in memory of Andre, a seal who was a well-known resident of the harbor. He was found as a young pup and raised by a local diver and harbormaster, Harry Goodridge. Andre was famous for being taken to an aquarium in the winter and then swimming back to Rockport in the spring.

4) Aldermere Farm Ocean Trail: The Ocean Trail is a 0.4-mile (0.64 km) long hiking trail that takes you from Calderwood Lane to the ocean (Penobscot Bay). It is part of Aldermere Farm Preserve. The site is a working farm (with Belted Galloway cows) and nature reserve, with trails, fields, woods, and a shoreline. You walk through a mixed forest before reaching the rocky shoreline. The view of the ocean (Penobscot Bay) and the rocky shoreline are the highlight.

In 1852 werd de naam veranderd in Rockport, vanwege het rotsige karakter van de kust. Op 25 februari 1891 werd Rockport officieel afgesplitst van Camden, sindsdien is het een zelfstandige gemeente (zie film).

In 1852, the name was changed to Rockport, because of the rocky nature of the coast. On February 25, 1891, Rockport was officially separated from Camden and has since been an independent municipality (see film).



In het Rockport Marine park staat het standbeeld van Andre een zeeleeuw liggend op een rots. Het is een symbool van trouw, natuurverbondenheid en gemeenschap. 

In the Rockport Marine Park stands the statue of Andre, a sea lion lying on a rock. It's a symbol of loyalty, connection to nature, and community. 



De Vulcan Locomotive is een historische stoomlocomotief die in Rockport Marine Park staat. Het vervoerde in vroeger tijden kalksteen (“limerock”) van de steengroeven in de omgeving naar de kalkovens in de haven, waar de kalksteen verwerkt werd.

The Vulcan Locomotive is a historic steam locomotive located in Rockport Marine Park. In earlier times it transported limestone ("limerock") from the quarries in the area to the lime kilns in the harbour, where the limestone was processed.





In de 19e eeuw was kalkproductie (lime), scheepsbouw en ijs oogst (“ice harvesting”) belangrijk. Langs de haven in Rockport Marine Park en de Goose River vindt je nog steeds overblijfselen van kalkovens (lime kilns). 

In the 19th century, lime production, shipbuilding, and ice harvesting were important. Remains of lime kilns can still be found along the harbor in Rockport Marine Park and the Goose River.



Rockport Marine Park ligt direct aan de haven. Hier vind je picknicktafels, banken, openbare voorzieningen, een boothelling (“launch ramp”) voor recreatief gebruik, en informatiepanelen over de historische kalkovens.

Central Street loopt door het hart van Rockport. Het behoort tot het historische district van Rockport, waarin veel oude gebouwen staan met karakter, vaak uit de 19e eeuw. De Ralston Gallery (hier op de foto) bevindt zich in een historisch gebouw aan 23 Central Street. Het gebouw zelf is een karakteristiek 19e-eeuws pand met granieten muren en een charmante uitstraling die bijdraagt aan de sfeer van het historische centrum van Rockport. 

Central Street runs through the heart of Rockport. It is part of Rockport's Historic District, which features many old buildings with character, many dating back to the 19th century. The Ralston Gallery (pictured here) is located in a historic building at 23 Central Street. The building itself is a characterful 19th-century structure with granite walls and a charming ambiance that adds to the ambiance of historic downtown Rockport.





Op de hoek van Central en Main Street zit een leuke koffie tent genaamd Freya's. Ze serveren niet alleen koffie maar ook lekker ijs. Een perfecte plek om van de omgeving te genieten. 

On the corner of Central and Main Streets is a lovely coffee shop called Freya's. They serve not only coffee but also delicious ice cream. A perfect spot to enjoy the surroundings.
