Omstreeks het einde van de 16de en het begin van de 17de eeuw zwierven vele Europese ontdekkingsreizigers door de kustgebieden van Massachusetts, nog voor de Pilgrim Fathers met de Mayflower hun beroemde reis ondernamen. Op zoek naar godsdienstvrijheid kozen de Pilgrims in 1620 het ruime sop en zetten koers naar Noord-Amerika, waar zij in Plymouth, ten zuiden van het tegenwoordige Boston, een kolonie stichtten. Belangrijker echter was de komst van de Puriteinen uit England. Toen John Winthrop in 1630 samen met een grote groep Puriteinen in Salem aankwam, in het bezit van de waardevolle koninklijke concessie (royal charter), stichtte hij een zelfstandige Engelse kolonie, bestuurd door de kolonisten zelf. Winthrop trok vanuit Salem naar Boston, een plaats die vanaf dat moment een belangrijke rol in de geschiedenis van de kolonie zou gaan spelen. Omstreeks 1640 woonden er in Massachusetts al meer dan 16.000 emigranten. Op 19 april 1775 raakten groepen boeren, tevoren gewaarschuwd door de Amerikaanse vrijheidsstrijders Paul Revere en William Dawes, bij Lexington en Concord slaags met Engelse troepen. Hierop volgde het beleg van Boston, de glorieuze overwinning in de Battle of Bunker Hill, en ten slotte, op 17 maart 1776, de Britse evacuatie. Massachusetts, de staat waar het eerste bloed van de Onafhankelelijkheidsoorlog werd vergoten, had de eerste belangrijke overwinning geboekt. Op 4 juli 1776 ondertekenden de Amerikaanse koloniën de Onafhankelijkheids-verklaring. In de 19de eeuw kwam Massachusetts tot grote bloei.

History of Massachusetts:
In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, many European explorers roamed the coastal areas of Massachusetts, even before the Pilgrim Fathers made their famous voyage on the Mayflower. Looking for religious freedom, the pilgrims chose the spacious sea to North America in 1620, where they founded a colony in Plymouth, south of the present Boston. More important, was the arrival of the Puritans from England. When John Winthrop arrived in Salem in 1630, in the possession of the valuable royal concession (Royal Charter), he founded an independent English colony, governed by the settlers himself. Winthrop went from Salem to Boston, a place that would play an important role in the history of the colony from that moment. Around 1640 more than 16,000 emigrants lived in Massachusetts. On April 19, 1775, groups of farmers were warned in advance by the American freedom fighters Paul Revere and William Dawes, at Lexington and Concord who struggled with English troops.
