Bezienswaardigheden / tips Lexington 2025:

1) Lexington: Op de historische landkaart van de Verenigde Staten neemt dit stadje een belangrijke plaats in, niet omdat het een mooie plattelandsgemeente is, maar omdat er een tijd lang twee beroemde helden van de zuidelijke staten uit de Burgeroorlog hebben gewoond, general Robert E. Lee en Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson. Vandaag de dag merk je dat de tijd heeft stil gestaan in Lexington. Behalve de prachtige statige gebouwen heeft Lexington voornamelijk bed & breakfast herbergen en restaurants die zich richten op een unieke mix van lokale en toeristische klanten. Zeker een leuke uitvalsbasis in de omgeving van Shenandoah National Park.  

2) Stonewall Jackson House Museum: Het Stonewall Jackson House, gelegen op 8 East Washington Street is het historische district van Lexington en was de residentie van de Zuidelijke generaal Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson van 1858 tot 1861. Het huis is een twee verdiepingen tellende, bakstenen woning met een grote stenen achter aanbouw. Het is het enige huis dat Jackson ooit heeft gehad. Hij woonde in het bakstenen huis met zijn tweede vrouw, Mary Anna Morrison Jackson, tot het uitbreken van de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog in 1861. Het huis en de tuin zijn van april tot december eigendom van en wordt geëxploiteerd als een historisch huismuseum door het Virginia Military Institute. Rondleidingen zijn dagelijks, elk uur en half uur, van 09.00 tot 16.00 uur. Het museum sluit om 17.00. 

3) Washington & Lee University: General Lee, in de Burgeroorlog opperbevelhebber van de Army of Northern Virginia in de strijdkrachten van de zuidelijke staten, werkte van 1865 tot 1870 als president van de plaatselijke hogeschool, die in 1871 in Washington and Lee University werd omgedoopt. In de Lee Chapel op de campus werd de in 1870 overleden Robert E. Lee in zijn familiegraf begraven. Het in 1867 opgerichte bakstenen gebouw dient als museum met talrijke portretten en een liggend marmeren beeld van Lee door de beeldhouwer Edward Valentine. In de kelder van de kapel is de spartaans ingerichte werkkamer van de generaal te zien. (De toegang is gratis). 

4) VMI Museum: In het VMI Museum bevindt zich een verzameling persoonlijke voorwerpen van Stonewall Jackson, zoals zijn favoriete hoed, dingen uit zijn leslokaal, en de geprepareerde huid van zijn paard Little Sorrel. De Parade Ground is ook nu nog het decor van exercerende cadetten, en rondom staan de stenen academiegebouwen met hun kantelen (vrijwel elke vrijdag kun je hier getuige zijn van het inspecteren van de troepen). Neem contact op met het museum voor een gratis rondleiding op de campus die om 12.00 uur wordt aangeboden. 



Highlights / tips Lexington 2025: 

1) Lexington: This town is prominent on the historic map of the United States, not because it is a pretty rural town, but because it was home to two famous heroes of the Civil War Southern states, General Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson. Nowadays, you notice that time has stood still in Lexington. In addition to the beautiful stately buildings, Lexington mainly has bed and breakfast inns and restaurants catering to a unique mix for locals and tourists. Certainly a nice base in the area of Shenandoah National Park.

2) Stonewall Jackson House Museum: The Stonewall Jackson House, located at 8 East Washington Street is the historic district of Lexington and was the residence of Confederate General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson from 1858 to 1861. The house is a two-storey brick house with a large stone rear extension. It is the only house Jackson ever owned. He lived in the brick house with his second wife, Mary Anna Morrison Jackson, until the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861. The house and garden are owned and operated as a historic house museum by the Virginia Military Institute from April through December. Tours are daily, every hour and half hour, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The museum closes at 5 pm. 

3) Washington & Lee University: During the Civil War, General Lee was commander in chief of the Army of Northern Virginia in the armed forces of the Confederate States, served as president of the local college from 1865 to 1870, which was renamed Washington and Lee University in 1871. Robert E. Lee, who died in 1870, was buried in his family plot in the Lee Chapel on campus. Erected in 1867, the brick building serves as a museum with numerous portraits and a reclining marble statue of Lee made by sculptor Edward Valentine. In the basement of the chapel you can see the general's spartan study room. (Entrance is free). 

4) VMI Museum: The VMI Museum houses a collection of Stonewall Jackson's personal artifacts, such as his favorite hat, things from his classroom, and the groomed skin of his horse Little Sorrel. The Parade Ground is still the setting for training cadets today, and all around are the stone academy buildings with their battlements (you can witness the inspecting of the troops here almost every Friday). Contact the museum for a free campus tour offered at 12 noon.

De stad werd gesticht in 1777, en hier werd de eerste militaire opleiding van de staat gesitueerd: het Virginia Military Institute (1839), ook wel het 'West Point van het zuiden' genoemd.

Founded in 1777, the city was home to the state's first military college, the Virginia Military Institute (1839), also known as the "West Point of the South."





Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson, de meest bewierookte generaal van de Confederatie, doceerde er tot 1851, het begin van de Burgeroorlog. 

Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson, the Confederacy's most acclaimed general, was teaching here until 1851, the start of the Civil War.

Hij was een briljant maar grillig bevelhebber en hij werd per ongeluk door zijn eigen troepen gedood tijdens de slag bij Chancellorsville.(zie film).

He was a brilliant but erratic commander, he was accidentally killed by his own troops at the Battle of Chancellorsville. (see film). 





Na de Burgeroorlog kwam Robert E. Lee aan het hoofd van Washington College te staan, de latere Washington & Lee Universiteit. 

After the Civil War, Robert E. Lee became the head of Washington College, later Washington & Lee University.
