Bezienswaardigheden / tips Franconia Notch State Park 2026:

1) Franconia Notch State Park: Dit 13 km lange spectaculaire bergpas, dat is uitgeroepen tot staatspark, ligt tussen de bergketens Kinsman en Franconia en heeft enkele indrukwekkende natuurwonderen. Het diepe dal, bereikbaar via US Highway 3 en Interstate Highway 93 (die hier samengaan), biedt zeer veel natuurschoon. In de omgeving staan verschillende hoge bergen: Mount Liberty (1340 m), Mount Lincoln (1535 m), Mount Lafayette (1600 m) en Cannon Mountain (1214 m). Een kabelbaan (Aerial Tramway) brengt vele passagiers tegelijk naar de top van Cannon Mountain, een skigebied met vele pistes. In Franconia Notch State park moet je een parkeerkaart van $ 5,00 voor één dag aanschaffen. Met deze parkeerkaart kun je bij alle attracties parkeren. De parkeerautomaten staan bij de meeste parkeerplaatsen, als deze er niet staan moet je $ 5,00 in een enveloppe doen die daar ter plaatse aanwezig zijn. De intructies spreken voor zichzelf. De belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden in het Franconia Notch State Park zijn beschermd gebied en worden hieronder benoemd.

2) Flume Gorge: Het hoogtepunt van Franconia Notch State Park is de Flume Gorge. Deze smalle kloof met granieten wanden torenen meer dan 27 m uit boven de wandelaars op het plankenpad. Een pad van 3 km leidt wandelaars langs verschillende interessante plekken, stromende beekjes en de mooie Avalanche waterval. Omdat deze natuurlijke attractie zeer geliefd is, is het raadzaam om vroeg in de ochtend of later in de middag de Flume Gorge te bezoeken. De wandeling duurt ongeveer 1,5 a 2 uur en het is raadzaam om regenkleding en schoenen met een goed profiel aan te doen want het kan glad zijn door het water. Tegenwoordig zit er ook een tijdslot op en moet je de tickets online bestellen. Als je toch een ticket bij het loket wilt kopen ben je $ 3,00 duurder uit en is er geen garantie dat je het park kunt betreden. Een online ticket voor een volwassen kost $ 18,00.  

3) The Basin: The Basin is een granieten kuil van ongeveer 6 m breed en ligt onder een kleine waterval. De kracht van het water die het gesteente heeft meegesleurd heeft er een natuurlijke en indrukwekkende poel van gemaakt. The Basin is een korte en makkelijke wandeling van 1.2 km en ligt direct naast de I-93. Je kunt ook een lange wandeling the Basin Cascade Trail maken vanaf het plaatsje Lincoln en deze trail is 4.2 km lang. De meeste mensen kiezen voor de kortere wandeling. 

4) Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway: De iconische Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway, bekend als de eerste in zijn soort in Noord-Amerika, brengt je binnen 8 minuten naar de 1.243 m (4.080 ft) hoge top van Cannon Mountain voor adembenemende uitzichten op de beroemde Franconia Ridge, Echo Lake Beach, de White Mountains, Maine, Vermont en zelfs Canada. De top biedt wandelpaden, hiking trails en een observatiedek voor een beter zicht op het majestueuze Franconia Notch State Park en de omliggende bergen, meren en steden. Terwijl je daar bent en alles in je opneemt, kun je ook even langs Café 4080 gaan voor snacks en de hoogstgelegen biertaps in New Hampshire! De Canon Mountain Aerial Tramway is in gebruik vanaf eind mei tot half oktober. Ook hier is een tijdslot en een retourticket voor een volwassenen voor de kabeltram kost $ 28,00 als je online boekt.

5) Artists Bluff: De Artists Bluff Trail is een geliefde wandelroute en is niet al te moeilijk om te lopen. Alhoewel er gedeeltes zijn waarbij je moet klimmen is de trail slechts 2,4 km lang en de wandeling duurt slechts 55 minuten. Eenmaal boven aangekomen op een rotsachtige plek kijk je uit over Echo Lake en Cannon Mountain. Artists Bluff is één van de meest gefotografeerde uitkijk punt in Franconia Notch State Park. Voornamelijk in het najaar wanneer de rode herfstkleuren op zijn mooist zijn. 

6) Echo Lake Beach: Echo Lake Beach biedt een verscheidenheid aan activiteiten voor liefhebbers van het buitenleven. Er zijn overigens twee Echo Lakes in New Hampshire. Eén bij North Conway en één in Franconia Notch State Park. Het meer is ideaal om te zwemmen tijdens de warmere maanden. Bovendien is vissen ook een populaire activiteit en kun je hier waterfietsen en kajaks huren. Er is ook een kleine camping alleen voor Campers. Vooraf reserveren is noodzakelijk. 

7) The Old Man of the Mountain: Een van de kenmerken van Franconia Notch is de zogeheten Old Man of the Mountains, ook wel Profile of Great Stone Face genoemd. Deze rotsformatie met het profiel van een menselijk gelaat bestond uit vijf grote blokken graniet, die op een hoogte van circa 360 m boven Profile Lake uit een bijna loodrechte rotswand naar voren stak. Geologen zijn van mening dat de vorm van dit gewezen gezicht dat van kin tot voorhoofd ongeveer 12 m meette, ongeveer 200 miljoen jaar geleden was ontstaan, toen het graniet tijdens een kristallisatieproces verticale breuklijnen kreeg. Nadat de dikke ijskorst was gesmolten, zorgde de inwerking van vorst ervoor dat het graniet langs deze breuklijnen afbrokkelde, waarna het profiel overbleef. Maar op 3 mei 2003 stortte de Old Man of the Mountain in. Deskundigen zeiden dat de rotsen door eeuwen van bevriezing en ontdooiing het begaven. Vandaag de dag is er niet heel veel meer te zien. 

8) Zwarte vliegjes (black flies): Vanaf medio mei tot de één na laatste week van juni (de Amerikanen zeggen tussen vader en moederdag) wordt de White Mountains overspoeld met zwarte vliegjes, the black flies. Deze vliegjes zijn klein, zwart en bijten. Ze halen een laagje van je vel af en poedelen zich in het bloed. Deze vliegjes zijn voornamelijk te vinden in de bossen dicht bij het water waar ze hun eitjes leggen. Hoog in de bergen komen ze zelden voor. Wij hebben dit als zeer lastig ervaren. Als je rond deze periode New England bezoekt (want het betreft deze hele regio), koop een goede insectenspray en draag beschermende kleding. 

9) Klimaat: Franconia Notch State Park heeft een microklimaat en wijkt af van de rest van New Hampshire. Het microklimaat van dit gebied wordt gedefineerd door invloed van de bergen, vochtigheid, temperatuur, winden en het seizoen. De natte grond bevordert verdamping waardoor het in dit gebied vochtig en mistig kan zijn. Ook in de zomermaanden komt dit geregeld voor. Het is daarom raadzaam om altijd een regenjas mee te nemen. De weersveranderingen in Franconia Notch State Park kunnen enorm zijn. Zo kan de dag zonnig beginnen en eindigt dit in dichte mist. Hou er rekening mee dat de attracties hoog in de bergen tijdens de mist niet aantrekkelijk zijn omdat er geen zicht is. 

Highlights / tips Franconia Notch State Park 2026:

1) Franconia Notch State Park: Situated between the Kinsman and Franconia mountain ranges, this spectacular 8-mile-long (13 km) pass, now a state park, is home to some impressive natural wonders. The deep valley, accessible via US Highway 3 and Interstate Highway 93 (which merge here), offers a wealth of natural beauty. There are several high mountains in the area: Mount Liberty 4.396 ft (1,340 m), Mount Lincoln 5.036 ft (1,535 m), Mount Lafayette 5.249 ft (1,600 m) and Cannon Mountain 3.982 ft (1,214 m). A cable car (Aerial Tramway) takes many passengers at the same time to the top of Cannon Mountain, a ski area with many slopes. In Franconia Notch State park you need to buy a parking pass of $5.00 for one day. With this parking card you can park at all attractions. The parking machines are located at most parking lots, if they are not there you must put $5.00 in an envelope that is available on site. The instructions speak for themselves. The main attractions in Franconia Notch State Park are protected areas and are listed below. 

2) Flume Gorge: The highlight of Franconia Notch State Park is the Flume Gorge. This narrow gorge with granite walls towers more than 90 feet (27 m) above hikers on the boardwalk. A 2 mile (3 km) trail takes hikers past various interesting spots, flowing streams and the beautiful Avalanche waterfall. Since this natural attraction is very popular, it is advisable to visit the Flume Gorge early in the morning or later in the afternoon. The trail takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and it is advisable to wear rain gear and shoes with good tread as it can be slippery due to the water. Nowadays there is also a time slot and you have to order the tickets online. If you decide to buy a ticket at the counter, it will cost $ 3.00 more and there is no guarantee that you will be able to enter the park. An online ticket for an adult costs $18.00. 

3) The Basin: The Basin is a granite pit about 20 feet (6 m) wide and lies beneath a small waterfall. The force of the water that has carried away rocks has created a natural and impressive pool. The Basin is a short and easy 0.8 mile hike that is located right off of I-93. You can also take a long hike the Basin Cascade Trail from the town of Lincoln and this trail is 2.6 miles (4.2 km) long. Most people choose the shorter hike. 

4) Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway: The iconic Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway, known as the first of its kind in North America, takes you to the 4,080 ft (1.243 m) high summit of Cannon Mountain in 8 minutes for breathtaking views of the famous Franconia Ridge, Echo Lake Beach, the White Mountains, Maine, Vermont and even Canada. The summit offers hiking trails, walking paths, and an observation deck for better views of the majestic Franconia Notch State Park and the surrounding mountains, lakes, and towns. While you’re there stop by Café 4080 for snacks and the highest beer taps in New Hampshire! The Canon Mountain Aerial Tramway operates from late May to mid-October. There is also a time slot here and a return adult ticket for the cable car costs $28.00 if you book online. 

5) Artists Bluff: The Artists Bluff Trail is a popular hiking trail and is not too difficult to walk. Although there are some sections that require climbing, the trail is only 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long and takes just 55 minutes to hike. Once you reach the top of a rocky spot you can look out over Echo Lake and Cannon Mountain. Artists Bluff is one of the most photographed viewpoints in Franconia Notch State Park. Especially in the fall when the red fall colors are at their best.

6) Echo Lake Beach: Echo Lake Beach offers a variety of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. There are two Echo Lakes in New Hampshire, one in North Conway and one in Franconia Notch State Park. The lake is ideal for swimming during the warmer months. Fishing is also a popular activity and you can rent pedalos and kayaks here. There is also a small campsite for campers only. Advance booking is essential. 

7) The Old Man of the Mountain: One of the features of Franconia Notch is the so-called Old Man of the Mountains, also called Profile or Great Stone Face. This rock formation with the profile of a human face consisted of five large blocks of granite, protruding from an almost perpendicular rock wall at an altitude of approximately 1,200 feet (360 m) above Profile Lake. Geologists believe that the shape of this former face, which measured about 40 feet (12 m) from chin to forehead, was formed about 200 million years ago when the granite developed vertical fractures during crystallization. After the thick ice crust had melted, the action of frost caused the granite to crumble along these fault lines, leaving the profile. But on May 3, 2003, the Old Man of the Mountain collapsed. Experts said that the rocks collapsed over centuries of freezing and thawing, and today there is not much left to see. 

8) Black Flies: From mid May until the second last week of June (the Americans say between fathers and mothers day) the White Mountains inundated with black flies. These flies are small, black and bite. They remove a layer off of your skin and soak in the blood. These flies are mainly found in the forests close to the water where they lay their eggs. They are rarely found high in the mountains. This was a terrible experience for us. If you're visiting New England around this time (as it affects this entire region), buy a good bug spray and wear protective clothing.

9) Climate: Franconia Notch State Park has a microclimate and is different from the rest of New Hampshire. The microclimate of this area is defined by the influence of the mountains, humidity, temperature, winds and the season. The wet soil promotes evaporation, which can make the area damp and foggy. This also occurs regularly during the summer months. It is therefore advisable to always bring a raincoat. The weather changes in Franconia Notch State Park can be dramatic. The day can start sunny and end in thick fog. Keep in mind that the attractions high in the mountains are not attractive during fog because there is no visibility.

De Flume Gorge is één van de meest bezochte natuurlijke attractie in Franconia Notch State Park. Bij het Visitor Centrum vind je alle informatie over het onstaan van de Flume Gorge en de trails die zijn uitgezet.

            De borden geven het al netjes aan, de trail is ongeveer 3,2 km lang en je moet ook een stuk klimmen. 

        The signs clearly indicate that the trail is approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) long and you also have to climb.





Als je bergafwaarts op het pad begint, kom je een enorm gletsjer rotsblok tegen. Er zijn veel van dergelijke rotsblokken op het wandelpad - de grootste weegt ongeveer 300 ton. 

As you start downhill on the trail, you will come across a huge glacial boulder. There are many such boulders on the trail - the largest weighs about 300 tons. 



                 De Flume Covered Bridge werd gebouwd in 1871 en loopt over de Pemigewasset rivier (zie film).

Het smalle ravijn strekt zich uit over een lengte van 240 meter langs de helling van Mount Liberty. De steile granieten wanden van het ravijn rijzen loodrecht omhoog; bomen vormen een dak van bladeren over het smalle ravijn (zie film).

Door het ravijn zelf loopt een voetgangersbrug, zodat de bezoeker de vele zeldzame varens, bloemen en mossen die zich aan de vochtige rotswanden hebben gehecht, van dichtbij kunnen bewonderen (zie film). 

A pedestrian bridge runs through the ravine itself, allowing visitors to closely admire the many rare ferns, flowers and mosses that have attached themselves to the damp rock walls (see film).

Zelfs midden in de zomer polijst het ijskoude water de op elkaar gelegen blokken graniet en heerst er een klimaat als in een koelhuis, omdat er vrijwel nooit een zonnestraal in de kloof schijnt (zie film).

De Sentinel Pine Bridge dankt zijn naam aan het feit dat het is gebouwd van een gigantische dennenboom die ongeveer een eeuw oud was (zie film).

Onder een kleine waterval in de Pemigewasset River bevindt zich een granieten kuil van ongeveer 6 meter (20 feet) breed, die bekend staat als "the Basin". Onder the Basin bevindt zich "Old Man's Foot", een opvallende rotsformatie. 

Beneath a small waterfall in the Pemigewasset River is a granite pothole about 20 feet (6 m) across known simply as "the Basin". Below the Basin is "Old Man's Foot". a distinctively shaped rock formation.
