3) Silver Cascade: Vanaf de Crawford Notch Station (Crawford Depot) ongeveer zo'n 1,4 km vind je aan je rechterhand voorbij de bocht een parkeerplaats met een mooi uitkijkpunt. Hier heb je uitzicht op Mount Bemis, Mount Willey en Mount Willard. Deze door gletsjers uitgesleten vallei is ontstaan ​​tijdens de laatste ijstijd. The trail starts out flat and crosses a shallow stream, then climbs up a moderate slope. The upper path mainly runs over stones that can be slippery when it is rainy. The trail is 3.2 miles long (5 km round trip) and takes approximately 2 to 3 hours to complete. Tip: Arrive early as it is one of the most popular hikes in Crawford Notch State Park due to the beautiful views. Wear sturdy footwear and walking sticks if necessary. If visibility is poor, there is no point to walk the trail!

3) Silver Cascade: From the Crawford Notch Station (Crawford Depot) about 0.9 miles (1.4 km) you will find a parking lot with a nice viewpoint on your right after the bend. From here you have views of Mount Bemis, Mount Willey and Mount Willard. This glacier-carved valley was created during the last ice age. Across the road from the parking lot are the Flume and Silver waterfalls. You can view these from the road. There is also an option to park your car along the road and view the waterfalls from the car if you don't want to cross the road.

4) Willey House: The next stop is the Willey House. Crawford Notch, the narrow mountain pass between the rock walls of Webster and Willey Mountains, became notorious in 1826. One night it rained so heavily that tons of mud and rocks thundered into the valley below, straight toward the home of innkeeper Samuel Willey and his family. Alarmed by the sound of the avalanche, the family fled outside. All seven were killed by the flying debris. Ironically, the avalanche passed over the house, which remained undamaged. Several writers, including New Englander Nathaniel Hawthorne, have immortalized this tragedy in literature.The house still stands and now serves as a visitors center. 

5) Ripley Falls: About 1.3 miles (2 km) from the Willey House is the Willey House Station Road on your right. From here you have to continue for another 0.3 miles (0.4 km) to the parking lot. From the parking lot there is a sign to the Ripley Falls Trail. Ripley Falls is the second largest waterfall in Crawford Notch State Park. Ripley Falls is 100 feet (30 meters) high and just as spectacular as Arethusa Falls.The trail is 2.4 miles (3.8 km) long (round trip) and is easier to walk than Arethusa Trail. Again, wear sturdy footwear.

6) Frankenstein Cliff Trail: From the Ripley Falls parking lot, it is a 2 mile (3 km) drive to the Frankenstein Cliff Trail and Arethusa Falls parking lot. About 0.5 miles (0.8 km) past the Dry River Campground, turn right and park in the parking lot on your right. Frankenstein Cliff is a gigantic rock formation that looms over the highway and appears to have a profile of Frankenstein’s monster embedded in the rock. The cliffs are actually named after a painter, Godfrey Frankenstein. The trail starts at the same location as the trail to Arethusa Falls. The trail starts out very flat and easy but quickly becomes very steep and requires climbing over loose rocks. The view from the cliff is very beautiful. On the left you can see the Giant Stairs along with the small peak of Mountain Crawford. If you continue 0.5 miles (0.8 km) you will have a view of Mount Washington or turn right 0.2 miles (0.3 km) to visit Falcon Cliff. The trail is 3.7 miles long (6.1 km return), it is a difficult walk because of the climbing over loose rocks.

7) Arethusa Falls: From the Ripley Falls parking lot it is a 2 mile (3 km) drive to the Frankenstein Cliff Trail and Arethusa Falls parking lot. About 1/2 mile (0.8 km) past the Dry River Campground, turn right and park in the parking lot on your right. Walk up the road and follow the path to the left of a private residence. The trail is 2.6 miles long (4,5 km round trip) and takes approximately 2 to 3 hours to complete. The hike ends at a spectacular 140 foot waterfall. Tip: Also try to visit the falls early because it is one of the most popular waterfalls in Crawford Notch State Park. Wear sturdy footwear and possibly walking sticks because it is slippery in the area around the falls. 

8) Bemis Brooke Trail: From the Arethusa Falls Trail, the Bemis Brook Trail heads off to the left and eventually rejoins the Arethesa Falls Trail after 0.5 miles. It passes Coliseum Falls and Fawn Pool, making it a great option for families who don’t want to hike the long trail. While the Arethusa Falls Trail stays on top of the ridge, the Bemis Brook Trail winds along the stream below, requiring you to climb the steep bank to get back to the main trail. If you want to hike both trails, it is advisable to take this short route from the Arethusa Falls Trail because of the climb.

9) Black Flies: From mid May until the second last week of June (the Americans say between fathers and mothers day) the White Mountains inundated with black flies. These flies are small, black and bite. They remove a layer off of your skin and soak in the blood. These flies are mainly found in the forests close to the water where they lay their eggs. They are rarely found high in the mountains. This was a terrible experience for us. If you're visiting New England around this time (as it affects this entire region), buy a good bug spray and wear protective clothing.

10) Climate: Crawford Notch State Park has a microclimate and is different from the rest of New Hampshire. The microclimate of this area is defined by the influence of the mountains, humidity, temperature, winds and the season. The wet soil promotes evaporation, which can make the area damp and foggy. This also occurs regularly during the summer months. It is therefore advisable to always bring a raincoat. The weather changes in Crawford Notch State Park can be dramatic. The day can start sunny and end in thick fog. Keep in mind that the attractions high in the mountains are not attractive during fog because there is no visibility.
